The solution to spiritual starvation is to take in the Word of God on a regular basis just as we take in food to feed our bodies. Explore the Bible and discover what it claims it can do. Humble yourself and read the Word and you will discover it is transcendent truth, alive and active, and able to bring spiritual growth. Recognize your need for the Word and spend time in the Word and you will find yourself connecting with God.

How to Become Spiritually Stable

Philippians 4:1-9

\r\nPaul describes to the Philippians how to stand firm in the Lord. Experiencing the peace of God is one way of knowing that you are in the will of God. He lists seven ways we can become spiritually stable. Have unity and humility in relationships. Cultivate a heart of joy. Become a person that is easy to please. Live with expectancy that Jesus is returning soon. Replace anxiety with prayer. Think about the positive things listed in verse 8. The facts in our heads should become truth in our hearts and lead to action in our lives.

The Fear of the Lord

Most Christians know the fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God, but few know what it is. The fear of the Lord is to stand in awe of God's greatness and express your awe by praising Him. It is waiting on and hoping in God's lovingkindness. It is following and obeying His moral instructions. In other words, fear of the Lord is to be humble before God.

Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler

When Jesus encounters the rich young ruler, he seems to deal with him differently than the others he has interacted with. Here, he seems to be pointing him back to the Law as the way to inherit eternal life. But in reality, he is pointing out to the young man that he is attempting to keep the law by watering down the requirements of the Law. He thinks he has kept them since his youth but Jesus shows him the Law requires perfection and he does not live up to that standard. Instead, he must receive the kingdom of heaven as a child receives a gift, with no expectation of deserving the gift.

The person of Jesus demonstrated that he was both fully human and yet still fully divine. He chose to set aside his divine abilities to live as a human so that he could fully experience all the things we experience. The work of Jesus on the cross was necessary because real forgiveness is costly suffering. The one who forgives bears the cost of the sin. God humbled himself to identify with us and die for us.

Shine Like Stars

Here, Paul discusses how we should respond to Christ's example of humility. He humbled himself by being obedient to the point of dying on a cross for the humans he so loves. We are called to follow his example of humility and obedience by "working out" in the example of our lives the salvation God has worked in us from the moment we accepted the free gift of forgiveness. This does not include grumbling or complaining! Instead our lives should be so different from the world that we shine like the stars.

The Emptying

The concept that Jesus was fully God as well as fully human can be difficult to comprehend for our limited human minds. nevertheless, Jesus, fully divine, chose to set aside his supernatural powers in order to live fully as a mere man on earth. He emptied himself of his godly powers and relied entirely upon the Holy Spirit as he lived as a man. He did this so that he could be our faithful high priest and intercede for us on the cross. Because he was fully God, he had the infinite nature that could take on an infinite judgment against sin. And because of his obedience even unto death on a cross, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all names.

The Emptying of the Son of God

We often minimize the humanity of Jesus. it is tempting to focus upon Jesus' divinity, his omniscience, his omnipotence, his omnipresence rather than his humanness. But it is these very divine attributes that make his action of coming down to earth as a mere human so unimaginably off the charts amazing. He truly was human while here on earth accomplishing his mission to save us. He emptied himself, or set aside, the use of his divine attributes so that he could be fully human and thus experience all the things humans experience in life on earth. If we minimize his humanity, we detract something from the enormity of his sacrifice for us. Someday his divinity will be recognized when every knew bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus is Lord.
